Adobe Flash Platform Summit 2010 Bangalore
@ Bangalore Adobe Flash Platform summit was held on August 25th & 26th.
I was so thrilled to attend the sessions, very curious to know new upcoming features & products.
Due to my office work I couldn't make it for both the days. I managed to attend the first day of the summit and it was fine. I heard from my friends that the 2nd day sessions where more interesting and engaging. Especially the session about BCI (Brain Computer Inteface) with AS.
Other key things i came to know from the event was
1. Stratus - For Peer-Peer communication with RTMFP (Real Time Media Flow Protocol)
2. Hero - The code name for the next version of Flex
3. Melrose - (codename) enables developers and publishers to distribute and make money with Adobe® AIR® applications through application stores. Melrose provides a repository that distributes applications to multiple application stores so that publishers can reach millions of users.
Here are the presentation slides from the speakers.

Strobe Media Playback from Adobe
Strobe Media Playback is built on OSMF, it comes with a predefined user interface.
Strobe Media Playback supports all the same video formats as OSMF, including Progressive Download, RTMP streaming, and HTTP Dynamic Streaming.
The interface can be controlled through HTML embed tags. You can control the player dimensions, set auto start and auto hide behavior, add full screen support, and much more.
The implementation is pretty simple, use Flashvars to set the values and you are on.

Ain't this easy? Keep reading about this @ Adobe

Flash Player 10.1 features
The new release of Flash Player is very impressive and got lots of cool features for desktop & mobile devices.
I was spending sometime reading about the features of the new player.
Here are the ones that I thought of much importance.
Multitouch and gestures
With Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1 using new ActionScript® 3.0 APIs one can create multitouch-aware content for a wide range of devices and multitouch-capable machines. Interact with multiple objects simultaneously or work with native gestures, such as pinch, scroll, rotate, scale, and two-finger tap.
Content protection
Using industry-standard cryptography, Adobe Flash Access 2 and Flash Player 10.1 provide a robust environment to protect content so it remains safe from tampering or capture throughout its lifecycle.
This is something that needs to be looked in again, as now it is available only for Desktops. Hope Adobe leverage this feature to all devices & OS.
Fast switch
Flash Player 10.1 is enhanced to improve Video streams to automatically adjust to changing network conditions by switching times between bitrates.
H.264 video hardware decoding
Deliver smooth, high-quality video with minimal overhead across supported mobile devices and personal computers using H.264 video decoding. Hardware video decoding offloads tasks from the CPU, improves video playback performance, reduces system resource utilization, and preserves battery life.
Optimized SWF management for mobile (mobile only)
Instances are loaded or deferred based on developer-defined SWF priority, visibility, and available memory and CPU resources to enable more immediate browsing experiences without waiting for every SWF on a page to load.
SWF playback automatically pauses when not in view to reduce CPU use, battery use, and memory use. Ain't this cool?
Sleep mode (mobile only)
Reduce CPU and battery consumption on mobile devices by slowing down the Flash Player timer when the mobile device goes into screen-saver or similar mode, with no interruption in audio/video playback. Incoming phone calls pause Flash Player.
Support for mobile platforms
The full fledged Flash Player support gonna be included in Android, Windows Phone 7, Palm webOS, Symbian, and BlackBerry. A porting kit and Linux® based reference implementation is available to Open Screen Project partners to port Flash Player 10.1 to other platforms. Flash Player 10.1 also adds support for Microsoft® Windows® 7 and Mac OS X v10.6 (Snow Leopard) desktop operating systems.
Out-of-memory management
Automatically prevent out-of-memory browser crashes by shutting down instances where a SWF file attempts to allocate more memory than is available on the device.
Mobile text input
Detecting native device virtual keyboard if present or using TextField support for key in data.

Google’s Gundotra Goes After Apple @ I/O Keynote
Good to see Google comes with do-or-die kinda attitude with Apple.
After all we are the beneficiaries as a developer/consumer.. ;)
My take was on Flash support on Android...will Apple rethink about so called Openness?
Here are the keynote videos

Augmented Reality (AR)
Augmented Reality?
Wiki defines it as,
Augmented reality (AR) is a term for a live direct or indirect view of a physical real-world environment whose elements are merged with (or augmented by) virtual computer-generated imagery - creating a mixed reality. The augmentation is conventionally in real-time and in semantic context with environmental elements.
In short, Augmented reality is a field of computer research which deals with the combination of real-world and computer-generated data.
Unlike virtual reality, augmented reality does not create a simulated reality.
few eye-catching stuff on AR, check out the videos

Phidget
Phidget! What? Something new i heard today and i wanted to know about it..and a quick search gave me an idea about this interesting stuff.
So now i know what it is and why is it for. :)
A phidget is a physical representation and/or implementation of a GUI widget.
A phidget (physical widget) is attached to a host computer via USB. There are various phidgets available, each having a counterpart class in the phidget API. As each phidget is attached to the host computer, it is made available to control in the API, where its state can be accessed and set.
Phidgets arose out of a research project in 2001 directed by Saul Greenberg at the Department of Computer Science, University of Calgary.
Phidgets can be programmed using a variety of software and programming languages, ranging from Java to Microsoft Excel.
The phidget API is what allows systems to access the phidget devices in a high level manner. The API allows the management of devices as they are attached, to subscribe to events and to access the state of the phidgets. The core API is originally written in C and has been extended to work in numerous languages including .NET and Java.

Adobe Squiggly
Squiggly is a spell checking engine for Adobe® Flash® Player and Adobe AIR®. The Squiggly library allows you to easily add spell checking functionality in any Flex 3 based text control.
Adobe is just doing a preview release of this library for developer community. And this supports only the Flash 10 runtime environment.
Know and check about the Squiggly here.
Important Note from Adobe :- The spelling suggestion algorithm for this release is based on English phonological rules. As such, it should only be used with an English dictionary for checking English text. The plan is to address this limitation in a future release of this project.

ASE - Android Scripting Enivronment
Here is the quick insight about ASE which I saw in Google labs.
The Android Scripting Environment (ASE) brings scripting languages to Android by allowing you to edit and execute scripts and interactive interpreters directly on the Android device. These scripts have access to many of the APIs available to full-fledged Android applications, but with a greatly simplified interface that makes it easy to:
Handle intents
Start activities
Make phone calls
Send text messages
Scan bar codes
Poll location and sensor data
Use text-to-speech
And more
Scripts can be run interactively in a terminal, started as a long running service, or started via Locale. Python, Perl, JRuby, Lua, BeanShell, and shell are currently supported, and we're planning to add more.
